- AVEFINE
- Average amount of fine imposed after conviction, measured in whole dollars. Average computed over all convicted defendants, excluding those for which no sentence information was recorded. This field uses the FINE field in Referral Detail Files in computing the average. See also MEDFINE.
- AVEPROB
- Average probation sentence, measured in months (rounded to the nearest tenth of a month). Average computed over all convicted defendants, excluding those for which no sentence information was recorded. This field uses the PROB field in Referral Detail Files in computing the average. See also MEDPROB.
- AVETCRT
- Average time (in days) between court filing and disposition. Because of the way referrals prosecuted before U.S. Magistrates rather than judges are recorded in the administrative records, elapsed time for these types of matters could not be included in the calculation of average processing times. The information available records only when such matters are concluded, but not when they are filed. See also MEDTCRT.
- AVETDEC
- Average time (in days) between receipt of the referral and the decision not to prosecute the case. See also MEDTDEC.
- AVETFIL
- Average time (in days) between referral and court filing (prosecution). Because of the way referrals prosecuted before U.S. Magistrates rather than judges are recorded in the administrative records, elapsed time for these types of matters could not be included in the calculation of average processing times. The information available records only when such matters are concluded, but not when they are filed. See also MEDTFIL.
- AVETIME
- Average prison sentence, measured in months (rounded to the nearest tenth of a month). Average computed over all convicted defendants, excluding those for which no sentence information was recorded. This field uses the TIME field in Referral Detail Files in computing the average. See also MEDTIME.
- AVETPRO
- Average time (in days) between receipt of the referral and the completion of the prosecution. See also MEDTPRO.
- CIRCUIT
- The federal judicial circuit in which the district is located.
- CITY
- The city headquarters of the federal district.
- CRIMINV
- Total fulltime criminal investigators on the payroll at the end of given fiscal
year. Compiled by TRAC from United States Office of Personnel
Management files.
- DEC
- Total number of declinations during the current year. Includes all disposals other than through prosecution. Counts are based on the number of defendants/suspects covered. This field uses DEC in the Referral Detail Files in computing the counts of declinations.
- DIS
- Total number of disposals during the current year. Includes both declinations and prosecutions completed. Counts are based on the number of defendants/suspects involved. Appeals are excluded from the count. This field uses DIS in the Referral Detail Files in computing the counts of declinations.
- DISTRICT
- The name of the federal district (abbreviated). This is a key field which uniquely identifies each record. There is one record for each of the 90 districts within the 50 states, plus an additional record for the United States as a whole. The United States record covers all 94 U.S. Attorneys offices, including those outside the United States in Puerto Rico, Guam, the Virgin Islands, and Northern Mariana Islands. See also USAONAME.
- E_DEC
- The number of declinations per every thousand criminal investigators. This
field was computed by TRAC by dividing DEC by CRIMINV (in thousands),
and rounding to the nearest whole number.
- E_DIS
- The number of disposals per every thousand criminal investigators. This
field was computed by TRAC by dividing DIS by CRIMINV (in thousands),
and rounding to the nearest whole number.
- E_FIL
- The number of filings (prosecutions) per every thousand criminal investigators. This
field was computed by TRAC by dividing FIL by CRIMINV (in thousands),
and rounding to the nearest whole number.
- E_GUI
- The number of convictions (by plea or by trial) per every thousand criminal investigators. This field was computed by TRAC by dividing GUI by CRIMINV (in thousands), and rounding to the nearest whole number.
- E_PRI
- The number of convicted defendants sentence to a prison term per every thousand criminal investigators. This field was computed by TRAC by dividing PRI by CRIMINV (in thousands), and rounding to the nearest whole number.
- E_REF
- The number of referrals received during the current year per every thousand criminal investigators. This field was computed by TRAC by dividing REF by CRIMINV (in thousands), and rounding to the nearest whole number.
- FIL
- The number of prosecutions filed during the current year. Counts are based on the number of defendants/suspects included in the prosecution. TRAC counts all prosecutions, whether the proceeding is before a judge or magistrate. This is a broader definition than that used by the Justice Department to define a "case" or prosecution. Appeals are excluded from the count. This field uses FIL in the Referral Detail Files in computing the counts.
- FY
- The federal fiscal year covered by this file. For example, data for 1994 covering October 1993 thru September 1994 are coded 94.
- GUI
- The number of convictions obtained during the current year. TRAC counts all prosecutions, whether the proceeding is before a judge or magistrate. This is a broader definition than that used by the Justice Department to define a "case" or prosecution. Appeals are excluded from the count. This field uses GUI in the Referral Detail Files in computing the counts.
- FULLTIME
- Total government fulltime employees on the payroll at the end of the fiscal year. Compiled by TRAC from United States Office of Personnel Management files.
- FEDEMP
- Total government employees on the payroll at the end of the fiscal year (includes those who are part-time). Compiled by TRAC from United States Office of Personnel Management files.
- MEDFINE

This is a broader definition than that used by the Justice Department to define a "case" or prosecution. Appeals are excluded from the count. This field uses NGUI in the Referral Detail Files in computing the counts.
- PCTDEC
- Percent of referrals disposed of without prosecution (rounded to the nearest tenth of a percent). The sum of PCTFIL and PCTDEC is 100 percent. This field was computed by TRAC by dividing DEC by the sum of DEC and FIL.
- PCTDGUI
- Percent of referrals resulting in a conviction (rounded to the nearest tenth of a percent). This field was computed by TRAC by dividing GUI by DIS. See also PCTGUI.
- PCTDPRI
- Percent of referrals who are ultimately convicted and given a prison sentence (rounded to the nearest tenth of a percent). This field was computed by TRAC by dividing PRI by DIS. See also PCTDPRI.
- PCTFIL
- Percent of referrals in which a prosecution is filed (rounded to the nearest tenth of a percent). The sum of PCTFIL and PCTDEC is 100 percent. This field was computed by TRAC by dividing FIL by the sum of DEC and FIL.
- PCTGUI
- Percent of prosecutions resulting in a conviction (rounded to the nearest tenth of a percent). This field was computed by TRAC by dividing GUI by the sum of GUI and NGUI. See also PCTDGUI.
- PCTPRI
- Percent of those convicted given a prison sentence (rounded to the nearest tenth of a percent). This field was computed by TRAC by dividing PRI by GUI. See also PCTDPRI.
- POP
- The total population [POP] for that year in the district. This was compiled
by TRAC from Census Bureau county level population estimates (as of July 1 for each year).
- PRI
- The number of defendants convicted and sentenced to prison during the current year. TRAC counts all prosecutions, whether the proceeding is before a judge or magistrate. This is a broader definition than that used by the Justice Department to define a "case" or prosecution. Appeals are excluded from the count. This field uses PRI in the Referral Detail Files in computing the counts.
- P_DEC
- The number of declinations per 100 million population. This field was computed by TRAC by dividing DEC by POP (in 100 millions), and rounding to the nearest whole number.
- P_DIS
- The number of disposals per 100 million population. This field was computed by TRAC by dividing DIS by POP (in 100 millions), and rounding to the nearest whole number.
- P_FIL
- The number of prosecutions filed per 100 million population. This field was computed by TRAC by dividing FIL by POP (in 100 millions), and rounding to the nearest whole number.
- P_GUI
- The number of convictions (by plea or by trial) per 100 million population. This field was computed by TRAC by dividing GUI by POP (in 100 millions), and rounding to the nearest whole number.
- PCRIMINV
- The number of criminal investigators per million population. This field was
computed by TRAC by dividing CRIMINV by POP (in millions), and
rounding to the nearest tenth.

- The number of convicted defendants sentenced to a prison term per 100 million population. This field was computed by TRAC by dividing PRI by POP (in 100 millions), and rounding to the nearest whole number.
- P_REF
- The number of referrals received during the current year per 100 million population. This field was computed by TRAC by dividing REF by POP (in 100 millions), and rounding to the nearest whole number.

- The number of referrals received during the current year. Both referrals that are immediate declinations, and referrals that become matters are counted. Counts are based on the number of defendants/suspects covered by each referral. Appeals are excluded from the count. This field uses REF in the Referral Detail Files in computing the counts.
- REGION
- The name of the region in which the federal district is located.
- RE_DEC
- Rank of E_DEC. Districts are ranked from high (rank of 1) to low (rank of 90).
- RE_DIS
- Rank of E_DIS. Districts are ranked from high (rank of 1) to low (rank of 90).
- RE_FIL
- Rank of E_FIL. Districts are ranked from high (rank of 1) to low (rank of 90).
- RE_GUI
