* Numbers do not reflect temporary work assignments -- whether on travel or when temporarily
detailed to another location since these do not appear to be systematically tracked in any
government-wide data system. Interviews with selected INS Border Patrol locations suggest
that small numbers of Border Patrol agents have been temporarily detailed to assist some
northern border stations in recent months, and that temporary details of Border Agents
from one location to another along the Mexican border also have occurred.
** Note: President Bush's FY 2003 Immigration Budget proposal calls for adding 570 additional
Border Patrol Agents to be divided evenly between
the northern and southern borders.
